I doubt that this is anything like the AU she had in mind, but these two had their own story to tell and this one has elements of both requests, in a way. It's woven around late S3 events, though some events and timeframes are altered. General familiarity with canon S3 is assumed.

The next fic in this series (At the End of the Night) is Jon's POV from later that same night. (ETA: The numbering has been modified to reflect this sequence of events.) This is part of the Refuge series and does make reference to several earlier stories in that series. One of the them (Held Constant) was a response to a lyrics challenge, and it felt appropriate to go back to those lyrics for this part:
